Highland Stag
Up and up, he climbed higher than any other would dare
Until the top he reached and breathed out a fog of mountain air
Cool and crisp against the morning his breath billowed in clouds around
The colour of the soft mountains and the heather on the ground
He is the great stag, wise creature, majestic and king,
Strong and proud the land he is quietly overlooking
His beating heart in rhythm with the soul of the land
A squirrel watches him from a tree in silent command
For all through time he has been the guardian of the streams
The moors and the mountains upon wherever the sun gleams
Quietly wearing his burden through soft old chestnut eyes
With a gentle smile known only to those with knowledge of the wise.
